The Reason Why You Should Only Get an Insulated Garage Door

Choice is great, isn’t it? When you are building or renovating your home, you have an endless array of material choices, colours, patterns and designs. When it comes to your garage door, however, there is one clear choice. Bypass every option that is not an insulated garage door. Why? Because we live in Edmonton. Let us explain…
The attached front garage is one of the most common designs for Edmonton home builders, and most garages are not heated. That means, there is an entire room attached to your house that is several chilly degrees lower than the inside of your home. If your garage door is not insulated, the garage cools down even faster, and that cold air can seep right into your home. This is not ideal in a city where the average low in January is -18◦C.

How Insulated Garage Doors Work

Insulated garage doors work on the layering principle, that is, warm air is trapped between layers. It’s the same reason why we put our kids in snowsuits in the winter. Layers equal warmth.
An insulated garage door is made from two sheets of steel. Between these two sheets is a layer of insulation. The amount and type of insulation depends on the brand as well as the door’s make and model.
Like home insulation, the insulating factor is measured by an R-value (a measure of thermal resistance). The higher the R-value, the better resistance to you’ll have to air transfer. For the Edmonton climate, we suggest a comfortable R-value of between 14-16.

The Main Consequence of a Non-Insulated Garage Door

You might be thinking, what’s the harm? I can put on a coat when I go into the garage. That is true, but remember, with most garages attached to the home, it’s not just the garage that gets chilly. The entrance between the garage and the home will also be affected, but most importantly, so will the room above the garage. For many people this room is the master bedroom or an upstairs family den. The last time we checked, hanging our or sleeping in a very cold room was not a great way to enjoy your house!

Other Considerations

While temperature transfer is the reason to buy an insulated garage door, there are other considerations. The dual-panelled filled door is much studier than a single-pane door, making it more secure and less resistant to being dented.
Insulated garage doors are also more energy efficient than their non-insulated counterparts, saving you money on your heating bill.
